“What’s another word for Thesaurus?” – Steven Wright
Steven Wright is an American comedian with a slow, deadpan personality. His jokes are ironic, witty and philosophical and he never cracks a smile! You can watch some of his videos here at his website. According to Wikipedia, in a 2005 poll to find ‘The Comedian's Comedian’, he was voted amongst the top 50 comedy acts ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders. He was named #23 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 greatest standups of all time.
How good is the thesaurus? I can’t live without my little Encarta dictionary book icon at the bottom of my screen. Just a double-click there, type in a word and I can get dictionary definitions or thesaurus results. It’s invaluable for assignments and reports! It's not for when people stupidly put big words that sound good just to impress the marker (words which usually don’t flow with the rest of the writing), but when you’re just looking for a more suitable word, or such a word is on the tip of your tongue and you need to jog your memory.
I actually looked up another word for thesaurus in my thesaurus and found these suggestions: dictionary, vocabulary list, word list, lexicon, glossary. Dictionary is clearly the wrong word, a vocabulary list doesn’t really help, nor does word list. Lexicon is apparently a dictionary (“especially one dealing with an ancient language”) and glossary is something at the back of a book which gives definitions, like a dictionary.
So in answer to Steven Wright’s witty quote, there doesn’t seem to be any other word for thesaurus. Well, at least, I can’t find one.
Does anybody else know if there exists another word for thesaurus?
