Why Does Toast Always Land Butter-Side Down?

July 21st 2006 02:11
"If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happens if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?" - Steven Wright

Steven Wright is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer from Burlington, Massachusetts. He is known for his slow, deadpan, monotone delivery of ironic, witty, deeply philosophical and sometimes confusing jokes and one-liners.

Does anybody know why it is that when you drop toast it unfortunately always lands butter-side down? I remember Dr Karl once gave the answer on one of his programmes. Have a think for a while, and write a comment if you think you know what the answer is…

Yeah I know; you drop it from waist/bench height, and it from that level it only has time to spin half way round. Because it starts from butter side up, it rolls and lands butter side down. If you dropped it from higher, like on top of the fridge, or alternatively held it butter side down on the plate, it would land butter side up on the floor. Make sense?
