Anyone ever heard of the phrase, ‘P’s make degrees’? (P’s as in Passes). This is very similar. The point is - all we need is a pass at uni, i.e. obtain a satisfactory mark and we can get through our tertiary education just like everyone else. Of course, to get into uni nowadays we need an amazing UAI score, but the quote implies that once we’re in we can become average Joe Bloes that ultimately end up running the world. But are these people entirely satisfied? I mean, if they tried a little harder and obtained better marks wouldn’t they feel more accomplished?
Aiming for pass marks does not entirely make sense, as employers aren’t as likely to hire pass-average students as they would higher achievers, but let’s not forget that employment is also based on factors other than educational performance, such as communication skills and work ethic.
Bottom line is - we can scrape our way through uni, but how able would we be to ‘run the world’ if we only ever put in a half-arsed attempt? Wouldn’t we be less employable, and hence less likely to ‘run the world’ at all?
