The Pain of Pick-Up Lines
July 4th 2006 01:01
“Do you have a Band-Aid? Because I just scraped my knee falling for you.”
Wikipedia says that pick-up lines are intended to be a “short and easy way of picking up”, and are “intended to display wit and arousal” but the result is often “rejection and humiliation” for the user. I wholeheartedly agree. Even if a guy used a pick-up line as a joke I’d consider it just sad and lame. They’re usually very crude, such as “If I could be anything, I'd love to be your bathwater” and “If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?” or very lame like “If you were a laser, you'd be set on ‘stunning’”.
Take this quote for example - talk about tacky! And that’s why it’s funny. I wonder if anybody out there in the dating scene actually use any form of pick-up line. And are there any lines that actually work effectively? In the movie, Bootmen, the apparent fail-safe line was something like “I believe that you are what you eat, and by tomorrow morning I plan to be you”. Another cringe-worthy quote. Anybody used this one successfully?
