Protect your kernels - African Proverb
April 20th 2006 00:00
"Two birds disputed about a kernel, when a third swooped down and carried it off."
- African Proverb
Today’s quote is actually an African proverb. I’m sure we’re all familiar with morals like this one. It implies that when we argue and fight over something, we lose regard for the reason of the argument (or in this case, the welfare of a physical object) and focus more on winning and being in possession of power. Who’s been in a situation like this before? The perfect example I think is two small children, both holding onto a toy and pulling at either end - resulting in the toy breaking and no child being able to appreciate it.
Like most quotes, this is one that indirectly suggests we change our behaviour to better our lives. And the moral of the story here is; we should try not to be so focussed on quarrelling that we lose sight of the very kernel of corn that we are disputing.
