Professor Frink and Computers
July 18th 2006 01:48
"If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside." - Robert X. Cringely.
This quote reminds me of what Professor Frink once said on The Simpsons. There was an episode set in the 1970s that featured mega-nerd Frink predicting that in the future computers will become so many times faster, larger and expensive that ‘only the four richest kings of Europe could afford them’. That line always made me laugh! Well they did get a lot faster over the years but with smaller components, and much cheaper too. Like this quote suggests, if cars went the same way as the development of computers, Rolls-Royces would be affordable and efficient but dangerous at the same time due to a yearly explosion!
I don’t know about that though… Touch wood, my computer doesn’t explode once a year, it just slowly declines like an elderly lady with Alzheimer’s.
