Joseph Conrad - Gossip

“Gossip is what no one claims to like, but everybody enjoys.” - Joseph Conrad
Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born British novelist born in 1857. Many critics have placed him as a forerunner of modernism.
I’m probably not the only one who agrees with this quote wholeheartedly. We’re surrounded by tonnes of gossip “Did you hear that so-and-so and so-and-so did this, or that”, “Can you believe what they named Angelina Jolie’s baby?” “Oh my God, Britney is getting so fat!” The existence of gossip is largely aided by trashy magazines like New Weekly, Who Weekly and others. There’s always a paparazzi shot of some poor celebrity who’s gotten caught without her makeup on and is hence now considered a ‘careless mother’. Gee, no wonder celebrities go mad and throw phones at people.
They’d be so annoyed with all the bull found in trashy mags; “Courtney Love is pregnant/a stripper/a lesbian/getting divorced/has been caught shoplifting.” No-one admits that they’re obsessed with this rubbish (unless they lead a very dull life) but there are still thousands of copies of Trash Weekly being sold every day.
Maybe I’m an exception, but frankly I don’t care what 'the stars’ are doing – I have my own life to worry about. If Tom Cruise wants to jump on a lounge or Winona Ryder wants to shoplift… woop-dee-do!
