Holding Back Progess: Committees and Accountants
August 23rd 2006 04:57
"There are four things that hold back human progress. Ignorance, stupidity, committees and accountants." - Charles J. C. Lyall
Something stood out for me in this quote. I am a strong beliver in committees holding back human progress. Well, meetings really. Ok, sometimes an efficient meeting could be an effective way to get things done, but in many cases I’ve seen – it isn’t. Take the work meeting for example. People see the whole thing as an excuse to have a break and socialise, but just as they’re getting into it the meeting starts and they’re expected to shutup and pay attention.
Same goes for lectures at uni. Once one person is up there and they are doing all the talking, it’s much easier to just tune out than to be attentive. If you’re not in the spotlight, what would make you listen?
And as for accountants: I know they are easy to bag out and they seem to just want to hold back your life, but in the long run they’re just trying to make it easier for you. So give them a break!
