H.G. Wells and Human History

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe." - H. G. Wells
This British writer who wrote The War of the Worlds, died in 1946 just after the end of WWII. So he lived his last years during the catastrophe of the war which became a major point in history.
Nowadays, more catastrophes are present with an ever increasing number of battles being fought and terrible natural disasters occurring. In the newspaper today we read of riots in East Timor, an earthquake in Indonesia killing over 5,000 people and the continuous conflict in Iraq, just to name a few, (earlier issues haven’t been any better - let’s not forget the trouble in The Solomon Islands and major Hurricane Katrina.)
As far as the ‘education’ half of the quote goes, I suppose if we do ever hear good news it could be news of discovery. A new anti-cancer drug, the power of vitamin C, and new developments in cloning technology, could be examples of those rare positive news headlines.
