George Burns and Preservatives

"Personally I stay away from natural foods. At my age I need all the preservatives I can get." - George Burns
Good point Mr Burns, except that preservatives are really bad for you! Nowadays foods are pumped with preservatives to maintain freshness and to keep it from spoiling or oxidising. I try to stay away from preservatives, but this is very hard! Preservatives are found in basically all packaged food, unless you buy organic.
Originally only salt, vinegar and sugar were used as preservatives, but now chemicals such as Benzoic Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Sulphur Dioxide and many other nasties appear in the foods we eat. George Burns lived till he was 100 years old which is pretty good for a preservative eater. But then again, he probably lived around the time where the only preservatives were the relatively harmless salt, sugar and vinegar.
