US Politician Calls Volunteer a Monkey
October 3rd 2006 21:33
"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great... Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." - Sen. George Allen
George is a Republican United States Senator from Virginia. He is running for re-election in 2006 and has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2008 Presidential election. Such an important man shouldn’t be so racist.
In this quote he said in August this year, he is apparently ridiculing S.R. Sidarth, a 20 year old volunteer at The University of Virginia and a native of Indian descent, by using an ethnic slur referring to a type of monkey found mainly in Asia – the macaca.
Wikipedia says they are the most widespread primate genus, ranging from northern Africa to Japan. These monkeys include the Rhesus Monkey and the Barbary Ape species. In some European cultures, macaca is also considered a racial slur against African immigrants, according to several websites that track ethnic slurs.
According to Washington Post, when asked what Macaca actually means Allen replied "I don't know what it means" and said it sounds similar to the word “Mohawk” which is what he and his colleagues nicknamed him due to his haircut (which is actually a mullet style). Sidarth believed that he was picked on as he was the only non-white person in the 100-strong room of republican supporters.
I know we should try and give the pollies a break, but why don’t they just tone it down and not try and always give such profound statements? That’s why they stuff up. And I’m sure this is what George Bush is so famous for…
