Frederick Wilcox and Taking Risks

June 6th 2006 00:00
“Progress always involves risk; you can't steal second base and keep your foot on first.”
- Frederick Wilcox

This is a good point! I don’t think the quote just has to relate to investments - but other things like moving house, choosing a job/career, and even just driving to work/uni all involve some element of risk. Some heroic people such as members of the police force and firefighters risk their lives by saving others, some risk their lives by smoking, driving dangerously or doing drugs.
Firefighters risk their lives for others...

We must choose the right amount of risk for the right reasons: remember that a reckless lifesaver could get killed and risking your child’s future on the pokies isn’t a wise choice either.

Like the quote says, if we want to progress we must step away from our comfort zone and take a (sensible) risk. If we don’t progress we will be stuck behind and be going nowhere.
