Edward Abbey - Keeping the Shrink Away

“A drink a day keeps the shrink away” - Edward Abbey
Edward Abbey was an American author and essayist who died in 1989. I like this rhyme he modelled off “An apple a day keeps the Doctor away”. In modern times, with everyone stressed from countless hours at work, traffic and attempting to run households as well, I think it’s important to have a relaxing drink at the end of the day to just de-frag.
What troubles me though is that the original rhyme spoke of Doctors, who you should see regularly to keep your health up to scratch. But Abbey’s rhyme underlines just how much people can rely on the help of psyciatrists, or ‘shrinks’. It seems that the thing to do nowadays if you’re having even a minor problem, is to pay some guy/girl over $100 an hour to have a chat with.
I think the Americans like to throw money at this sort of thing. You always see movies with main characters (who seem rather normal) referring to their ‘shrink’. Even the word ‘shrink’ has made it easier to disclose that you are actually seeing a psychiatrist, which shouldn’t be as casual as people make it out to be.
