Cluttered Desk? Cluttered Mind
September 8th 2006 02:57
"If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"- Albert Einstein
An empty mind? Nope that just doesn’t work. Just because a cluttered desk apparently signifies a cluttered mind I don’t think you can then make a correlation between an empty desk and an empty mind.
I agree with the claim though. When my desk is cluttered it just shows how many things I’m working on and how much stuff I have to get done by certain due dates. And this is what jumbles up my mind and stresses me out. I know it’s better to put things in priority piles or something but then you tend to forget about what needs to be done. If things are spread out all over your desk you can see every task you need to take care of! But then, it’s also confusing, and there’s no room to work (or think)!
An empty desk however, is obviously a good outcome. Because that would mean you have nothing more to do. But then, that could be very boring if you don’t have a life outside work/study, and if you require some solid mental stimulation. This is why I’m not a fan of the holidays, no work, no thinking. I feel like more of my brain cells die every day because they’re not being used (or possibly because they are drowned in alcohol!)
I think the best desk though, would be one that has work needed to be done but is in an orderly fashion, i.e. in piles with post-its or something. With an inbox too. That’d be the best. And I suppose then that could symbolise your mind being ordered and structured, with systems and priorities and no clutter - this would be a defragged desk!
