Chicago - You Pop That Gum One More Time..
November 3rd 2006 11:08
“You know how some people have those habits that get you down? Like Bernie. Bernie liked to chew gum. No, not chew. POP. So I come home from work one night and I'm real irritated, and I'm looking for a little sympathy. And there's Bernie, lying on the couch, drinking a beer and chewin'. No, not chewin'. POPPIN'. So I said "If you pop that gum one more time..." And he did. So I took the shotgun off the wall and fired two warning shots... in…to…his….head.” Liz (Chicago)
Has anybody seen the movie-musical Chicago and not absolutely loved it?! This movie is definitely in my top five. Chicago has the best music, the best stars and is set in the coolest (jazz) era. Catherine Zeta-Jones is such a talented singer and actress, and Renee Zellweger as Roxie Hart is so… thin! It’s amazing how she dropped from her size 14 in Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) to probably like a size 8 max for Chicago (2002)!
Probably my favourite song in this movie is “Roxie’s first number… a song of love and devotion, dedicated to her dear husband Amos”. Here, she sings about how much her husband stands by her no matter what she does, if she’s wrong or right, etc. “Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m wrong, but he doesn’t care, he’ll string along”. But after a while, Amos (who in the background is being questioned by the detectives at a murder Roxie carried out) lets it slip that she committed the crime and she turns the song backwards: “Look at ‘im go! Rattin’ on me! With just one more brain what a half-wit he’d be! (I love that quote)”
Other great quotes that Roxie gave in the movie are…
• “Anyway, I started fooling around, then I started screwing around, which is fooling around without dinner.”
• “He was trying to burgle me.” Detective: “From what I hear, he's been burgling you three times a week for the past month.”
Matron Mama Morton, the money-hungry butch jail warden says some greats too…
• “As you know I'm here to take care of you. Now if anything hurts you, or upsets you in any way... don't run your fat ass mouth off to me cause I don't give a shit. Now move out!”
• “Come on, Vel, you know how I feel about you. You're like family to me, one of my own. [pause] I'll do it for fifty.”
• (In song) “They say that life is tit for tat, and that's the way I live... so I deserve a lotta tat for what I've got to give.”
Chicago’s a great movie for (most) ages, although it does have a little bit of violence at the start. And even though it’s a musical, I don’t think believe you have to be musically minded to enjoy it. Chicago had 13 nominations and won 6 awards including "Best Picture". Catherine Zeta-Jones won "Best Supporting Actress" and the movie also took home "Best Costume Design", "Best Art Design/Set Design" and "Best Sound" as well as "Best Editing".
So go out and hire it, or watch it again! It’s such a classic funny and entertaining movie with tunes you’ll be humming for ages afterwards… “When you’re good to Mama, Mama’s good to you.”
