Blackadder - Rowan Atkinson on Charlie Chaplin
August 7th 2006 00:35
“I find his films about as funny as getting an arrow through the neck and discovering there's a gas bill tied to it.” Rowan Atkinson (on Charlie Chaplin)
This quote is from Blackadder, an English sitcom that originally ran in the 1980’s. Starring Rowan Atkinson, each series of this show was set in a different period of English history beginning in 1485 and ending in 1917.
You may remember a Blackadder special called Blackadder’s Christmas Carol which was a funny twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Instead of turning the cruel, tied-arse Ebenezer Scrooge into a kind, altruistic individual – the reverse occurs, with Ebenezer Blackadder proclaiming “Bad guys have all the fun" and changing into his familiar Blackadder personality.
Like most English comedy I think Blackadder makes it to my ‘decent comedy’ list. I only wish there was some good humour like this on TV nowadays. Even some good Australian comedy would help clear the drought we are in at the moment. What ever happened to hilarious shows like Full Frontal or Kath & Kim? And no, before you even mention it, crap like The Wedge will definitely not suffice.
