Benjamin Franklin: Death, Taxes & Rug Sales
August 10th 2006 04:35
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." - Benjamin Franklin
Since you are devoted readers of my blog, I’ll let you all in on a little secret; Benjamin Franklin was misinformed, for it’s not just death and taxes that are certainties of this world, it’s death, taxes… and RUG SALES!
Every time I’m driving around a well-populated Sydney suburb there’s always the token sign - “RUG SALE! UP TO 90% OFF” Here I ask the question, why are rugs always on sale? Do rug shop owners make prices impossibly high just so they can "SLASH PRICES" on their "LAST DAY ONLY RUG CLEARANCE"? Well, at least the advertising for these events is usually relatively subtle with just signs outside shops and if you’re lucky – an ad in the SMH.
But what about the - “FOX STUDIOS WAREHOUSE FACTORY CLEARANCE! ALL PRICES SLASHED! Designer Jeans NOT $199, NOT $100 but SLASHED DOWN to $20 BUCKS” - ads on TV? And just in case the colourful writing that annoyingly bounces around the screen doesn’t grab our attention there’s also a screaming male voice over, running a mile a minute through the details of the “NEVER TO BE REPEATED” sale.
But these warehouse sales are never as common as the thousands of rug sales plastered all over Sydney. If Benjamin Franklin were alive today I bet he’d reconsider his quote to include them.
