Al Capone - Persuasion with a gun

April 14th 2006 00:01
"You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone." – Al Capone

This is a good one! Al Capone was an infamous American gangster in the 1920s and 1930s. As jokingly as the quote sounds, he is just underlining how charitable people can get when their lives are at stake. Most victims’s strong willed and stubborn attitudes turn to shreds once a gun is pointed at their face, no matter how old and worthless there life actually is. But I ask you this; what is it about death that we are all so scared about?

I’m aware no-one would want to die with a bang, but it is interesting to discuss why the general notion of death is so frightening. Most people believe it is the unknown which plagues us the most, the idea of relatively understating your life, and how the world works, but being essentially clueless about the afterlife, (or if there even
Al Capone, he even looks like a gangster!
is an afterlife!) What do our readers think about this?

I think it is a mixture of things that makes us scared of death. The unknown is definitely a big part. As humans, we like to stay in control with as many things as possible... especially with things that happen to ourselves. And if we can't control it, we atleast like to hear other people's experience. Death is one of those things that we can't ask someone "so how is it".

I also think it is because there is never a time in our life where we feel complete. There is always something that we want to do, something we need to say to someone, bills that need to be paid... just something that is going on. And if they were to die that day, we feel we would have regrets. It is like we never live up to that quote "seize the day".

So yea, that is what I think! Good post

My own thoughts on this are pretty complicated, so rather than ramble on... since this is a Famous Quotes blog, here is a quote from Marcus Aurelius on fear of death and uncertainty about the afterlife that resembles fairly well what I think:

"Either the world is a mere hotch-potch of random cohesions and dispersions, or else it is a unity of order and providence. If the former, why wish to survive in such a purposeless and chaotic confusion; why care about anything, save the manner of the ultimate return to dust; why trouble my head at all; since, do what I will, dispersion must overtake me sooner or later? But if the contrary be true, then I do reverence, I stand firmly, and I put my trust in the directing Power."
