Air Pollution in Developing Countries
July 19th 2006 02:58
"In an underdeveloped country don't drink the water. In a developed country don't breathe the air." - Jonathan Raban.
This British travel writer, Jonathan Raban, hits the nail on the head with this quote. Just look at developing countries such as Mexico City, one of the most polluted cities on earth. But in this case the city’s air pollution may have natural causes; Wikipedia believes that the mountains and volcanoes surrounding it tend to trap polluted air in the city. But I believe this quote holds true for most cities due to the intense amount of petrol fumes rather than natural causes.
Raban believes that developed countries generally have clean water. But the city of London I believe is an exception. The water there is totally foul. I drank bottled water the whole time while I was there earlier this year. They say that Sydney water is one of the best on the planet – and they’re right. I haven't bothered filtering my tap water since.
