Aesop's Fables - The Grasshopper That Sang All Sum
May 30th 2006 00:00
Another one of Aesop’s classic fables: “It is thrifty to prepare today for the wants of tomorrow”.
When we hear this quote I bet many of us instantly think of the grasshopper that sang all summer, not readily preparing himself for the coming winter. This quote is the moral of that story by Aesop, who was a Greek slave and lived around 500BC.
The hard working ants of the tale that spend their winter days drying grain collected in the summertime, are aware of the lazy grasshopper, and when he kindly asks for some food they reply: "If you were foolish enough to sing all the summer, you must dance supperless to bed in the winter."
This quote reminds us that we need to work hard to survive, but nowadays it’s not usually hard labour that we need to keep up - we need to do be diligent in the office and at uni and in keeping solid relationships with others.
