Famous Quotes - May 2006

Strindberg and Fatherhood

May 31st 2006 00:00
“That is the thankless position of the father in the family -- the provider for all, and the enemy of all.”
- J. August Strindberg
Strindberg - the serious father model.

Johan August Strindberg lived in the late 1800s and was a Swedish writer, playwright, and painter. He is ranked among Sweden's most important authors. This quote is somewhat outdated on account of the rise of women in the workforce in the last few decades (‘the father… the provider of all’ doesn’t really apply anymore).

But what I believe has only recently become obsolete is the idea that the father is the ‘enemy of all’. Back in the day (when I was a kid... which actually wasn’t too long ago!) there was that “Just wait till your father comes home!” threat which I know is rarely used now. This is partly due to my first point, that women now are also in the workforce and aren’t necessarily the ones at home dealing with their kids’ misbehaviour. Also, I think parents have become more lenient. Like I’ve said before, it’s so much easier to just let their kids argue/pull hair/watch too much TV then actually taking action and disciplining them. What do the reader's think? Are the little scoundrels getting away with more nowadays?

Don't Be Yourself - Thomas Masson

May 31st 2006 00:00
“Be yourself is about the worst advice you can give to some people.” – Thomas L. Masson

Hahaha! I hope this quote was meant to be a bit of a joke, going against the feelgood slogan <insert American accent> “Be Yourself”. I’m sure there are heaps of times when most people try not to act themselves in different situations. For example; there’s the usual shy person who attempts to act confident around strangers, the nerd who tries to fit in by not referring to past chess games when meeting new people, and the classroom pet who acts like a goody two-shoes around the teacher but is a right bully in the schoolyard.

Another one of Aesop’s classic fables: “It is thrifty to prepare today for the wants of tomorrow”.

When we hear this quote I bet many of us instantly think of the grasshopper that sang all summer, not readily preparing himself for the coming winter. This quote is the moral of that story by Aesop, who was a Greek slave and lived around 500BC.

Dorothy Sarnoff - The Interview

May 26th 2006 00:14
“Never try to look into both eyes at the same time. Switch your gaze from one eye to the other. That signals warmth and sincerity.” - Dorothy Sarnoff
Where is your gaze directed in an interview?

Here, this singer, speech consultant and author talks about how to direct your gaze during an interview. I don’t know about our readers, but I’m not totally aware of what I do when I go for an interview – I’m pretty sure that I just act as I would when speaking to a friend (although, in a lot more nervous manner!). Do readers believe that Sarnoff is right, and that we should be fixed on one eye, and then the other? Maybe this method is to show that we are focussed and paying attention. Otherwise we could just be staring into space, I suppose.

Life and Pianos

May 24th 2006 00:51
“One man gets nothing but discord out of a piano; another gets harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life is about the same. The discord is there, and the harmony is there. Study to play it correctly, and it will give forth the beauty; play it falsely, and it will give forth the ugliness. Life is not at fault.” - Anonymous

I wish I was better at playing the piano! Well I used to play ok, but now I'm am a little rusty due to not practising...
We play our own tune of life...

“What did it matter where you lay once you were dead? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as wind and air to you.”
- Raymond Chandler

Robert Frost - The Road Not Taken

May 19th 2006 00:00
“Two roads diverge in a wood, and I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost

I studied this quote from the famous poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost in year 11 at school. I loved it, Frost has beautiful poetry and I always found it interesting how this poem had a hidden meaning, like most, I suppose.

Arthur Bloch and machines...

May 16th 2006 00:08
“If you improve or tinker with something long enough, eventually it will break or malfunction.” - Arthur Bloch

Arthur Bloch is an American writer, author of the Murphy's Law books, and this quote applies to me for sure! A recent example would be when I had a Physiology practical the other day and as we were getting a lecture about what to do I clicked on something on one of the computers, (which had apparently been set up perfectly for the prac) and yeah, I basically buggered it up.

Mother Theresa Quote

May 11th 2006 00:24
Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta
“Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.” – Mother Theresa

Mother Theresa’s death was around the same time of Princess Diana’s and hence wasn’t, in my opinion, properly recognised at the time. Mother Theresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in India. Her work among poverty-stricken Calcutta made her one of the world's most famous people, and she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in October 2003.

Crying Kids and Crownless Kings

May 9th 2006 01:00
Where's my doll Mummy?
"Nothing that grieves us can be called little: by the eternal laws of proportion a child's loss of a doll and a king's loss of a crown are events of the same size.” – Mark Twain

That’s a good point to consider. Although, a child’s relationship to a doll is one of love, companionship and a true feeling of real social interactions. On the other hand, a King treats his crown as a shiny expensive hat which symbolises his power and nobility. If he did happen to misplace it, it would be possible to obtain another one which could be even shinier and more beautiful than before.

“Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no delay, no procrastination; never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” – Lord Chesterfield

Very well said Lord Chesterfield. It’s just that sometimes you just can’t be bothered. If you’ve got a uni assignment to do which is due two weeks from now, why can’t it wait another day so you can bludge and watch ER? All of these big profound quotes are all very good to keep in mind, but I reckon if we abided by them all the time, we’d drive ourselves (and others around us) crazy!

Beware the TV...

May 2nd 2006 00:40
The TV; man's new best friend.
“Don’t you wish there were a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence? There’s one marked ‘brightness’, but that doesn’t work”- Gallagher

Now I’m not sure which Gallagher gave this quote; it could have been a literary critic, an actor or stand up comedian - the author is just known as Gallagher. But whoever it was, I think they’re a genius. Ok, there are some, and I mean some things worth watching on TV. For example, Catalyst, ER, Family Guy, The Simpsons and any British documentary or comedy. But most of the viewing is utter commercial crud.
